News Power warning: How the giant pylons could switch off Scots film industry 29 October 2005 A LEADING Scots filmmaker last night warned that "an army of Eiffel Tower-like pylons" planned for Scotland could drive high-profile productions out of the country. Douglas Rae, managing director of Ecosse Films, maker of successes such as Monarch of the Glen and the award-winning movie, Mrs Brown, said Scotland's reputation as "one of the last great wild locations of the world"was under threat. HIGHLANDS SAY NO TO PYLON BLOT ON THE LANDSCAPE 13 April 2006 Controversial plans for giant pylons on the 140-mile Beauly to Denny power line were delayed yesterday by at least another year. Highland councillors and their Perth and Kinross counterparts opposed Scottish and Southern Energy proposals to double the size of many of the structures. |
FINAL PROTEST ON GIANT PYLONS 12 April 2006 Demonstrators will launch a final assault on Highland councillors this morning to urge them to pull the plug on a power giant's plans for building massive pylons between Beauly and Denny. After several years of debate, planning chiefs have recommended rejection of Scottish and Southern Energy's application for an upgrade of its transmission line to accommodate an expected surge of green energy production. |
SUB-STATION TO SERVE GIANT POWER LINE TURNED DOWN 11 April 2006 The developers behind controversial plans for upgrading the Beauly to Denny power line suffered an electric shock yesterday when councillors threw out a planning application to expand a crucial link. Scottish and Southern Energy hopes to extend the grid sub-station at Wester Balblair near Beauly to help accommodate its envisaged future surge in power from green energy projects across the Highlands. |
COUNCIL LIKELY TO OPPOSE CONTROVERSIAL PYLON PLAN 10 April 2006 Controversial plans to erect a huge line of electricity pylons from Beauly to Denny look likely to be opposed by Perth and Kinross Council. Planning chief Ian Sleith has raised concerns about Scottish and Southern Energy's (SSE) plans to put up hundreds of steel pylons, measuring up to 200ft tall. He is recommending councillors object to the proposals because of the impact on the Perthshire landscape. |
COUNCIL MAY GET TOUGH OVER GIANT PYLONS 31 March 2006 There are growing signs that Highland Council will force power firm Scottish and Southern Energy to bury parts of its new Beauly-Denny line to appease thousands of objectors to giant pylons. Soundings from planning chiefs, on their return from a day-long visit to key locations, suggested there will be a last-minute bid to have the planning application for the £320million transmission line upgrade rewritten to avoid a lengthy and costly public inquiry. |
Giant pylons could cost North millions in film revenue 31 March 2006 PLANS for a line of giant pylons could deter film and TV companies from coming to the Highlands resulting in the loss of millions of pounds to the local economy, according to the Scottish Highlands and Islands Film Commission. Its fears over the potential loss of business have been spelt out to Highland councillors who are being recommended by officials to oppose controversial proposals to upgrade the overhead power line from Beauly to Denny. |
PLANNERS ATTACKED OVER PYLONS TRIP 28 March 2006 Planners were condemned yesterday for cramming a 200-mile fact-finding mission to consider the implications of giant pylons slicing through the Highlands into one day. Tomorrow's road trip is meant to prepare councillors for a decision on Scottish and Southern Energy's proposals on April 12. |
Legal fees place hurdle to power line inquiry 07 March 2006 FINANCIAL concerns could stop a public inquiry being held into the controversial plans for a high-voltage overhead power line between Beauly and Denny.Stirling Council, the first local authority along the route to consider the proposal, has stopped short of lodging a formal objection for fear of being left with a hefty legal bill. |
INQUIRY MAY DELAY POWER COMPANY'S PYLONS PLAN 04 March 2006 A Power giant's plans to build pylons through the heart of the Highlands, including the Cairngorms National Park, could be severely delayed by a public inquiry. Just one planning authority affected along the route can trigger such a probe and yesterday Stirling Council informed ministers of its objection to Scottish and Southern Energy's (SSE) proposals for upgrading the Beauly to Denny transmission line. |
SCOTTISH NATURAL HERITAGE TO TELL MINISTERS OF CONCERNS OVER PYLONS 28 February 2006 A Government agency created to protect the environment will today brief ministers on its concerns about the proposed pylon line upgrade between Beauly and Denny. Amid pressure on the Scottish Executive to hold a public inquiry to appease at least 19,000 objectors, Scottish Natural Heritage (SNH) has waited until the final day open to it, to submit its thoughts on the plans to almost double the size of many pylons along the 137-mile route |
MSPS FEAR SUPER-PYLONS COULD INCREASE CANCER RISK 23 February 2006 Cases of a life-threatening form of blood cancer among children could increase if a chain of super-pylons goes ahead down the backbone of Scotland, it was claimed last night. MSPs fear children living close to the Beauly-Denny power line will be at a greater risk of leukaemia because of the electromagnetic fields generated by the 400kV cables. |
POWER-LINE PROTESTERS WITHIN SIGHT OF INQUIRY 11 February 2006 Thousands of campaigners are within sight of securing a public inquiry into a power firm's plans to carve a line of giant electricity pylons through the Highlands. Protesters learned yesterday that Stirling Council is to lodge an objection to plans by Scottish and Southern Energy for a £320million upgrade of its 140-mile transmission line between Beauly and Denny. |
Wind farms face 10-year delay for grid connection 05 February 2006 THE government’s renewable energy policy is in chaos after hundreds of wind farm companies were told that they face delays of more than 10 years before they can sell any of the electricity that they produce.Green energy targets are under threat because the national grid is unable to cope with the large numbers of wind farms applying for connection. |
Power without the glory - and a blight on the landscape 31 January 2006 The Highlands are known across the world for spectacular scenery and for a diverse range of wildlife. A controversial scheme could put an end to all that by erecting up to 600 giant pylons ranging over 140 miles. David Lister reports.A LEADING film producer is to lobby the Government in protest at plans to build up to 600 giant electricity pylons through some of Britain's most spectacular scenery. |
RESIDENTS STUNNED BY POWER GIANT'S REVELATION AT PUBLIC MEETING 28 January 2006 Power giant Scottish and Southern Energy has reportedly conceded that a public inquiry into its controversial plans for the Beauly to Denny pylon line is now a foregone conclusion. Such a move could severely delay work on the £320million project. The revelation emerged at a public meeting in the Highland village of Kilmorack at which SSE representatives gave a presentation on how the upgrade would signal a major expansion of the electricity substation. |
PRESSURE GROWS FOR PYLONS INQUIRY AS 18,000 MAKE PROTEST 25 January 2006 Pressure on the Scottish Executive to hold a public inquiry into proposals for upgrading the pylon line between Beauly and Denny has intensified with the expectation that around 18,000 people have lodged formal objections. Allan Wilson, the deputy enterprise minister has confirmed that as of January 9, the Scottish Executive had recorded 9,047 objections to the proposed power line and that there were another estimated 9,000 responses to be registered. He said there had been only 36 responses in favour of the line. Various campaign groups along the route are delighted with the extent of the opposition to electricity giant Scottish and Southern Energy's planning application. Community pressure groups have alleged the £320million project would pose a serious health risk and blight much of the landscape along the spine of the Highlands. |
Rail Lines Alternative to Pylons is Urged 12 January 2006 A Senior Highland councillor wants a power company to investigate running windfarm power cables along parts of a railway track instead of building a controversial line of replacement pylons from Beauly to Denny in Stirling-shire. Councillor Bob Wynd will put forward the proposal at a planning meeting when Scottish and Southern Energy (SSE) highlights its proposals to Highland Council at a future date. |
Let's lay it on the line: this power plan must go to a public inquiry 04 January 2006 THERE are many reasons why the proposed giant pylon line between Beauly and Denny is misguided and, given the unease felt by all those who would be affected directly, it would be wrong not to have a public inquiry to examine in detail a proposal that may set the benchmark for future energy devel-opment and transportation. To read the full article you need to subscribe to www.scotsman.com. |
Pylons Campaigners Welcome Protest Deadline Extension 29 December 2005 An Action group campaigning against the Beauly-Denny pylon line upgrade has welcomed an extension to the deadline for objections to the proposal. A late addition to an environmental statement from developers Scottish and Southern Energy (SSE) has led to the period for comments being extended from December 12 to January 31. |
Concern over pylons prompts plan for public health probe 22 December 2005 A Cross-party group of MSPs is to investigate increasing public concern about possible risk to public health from pylons and masts, existing and proposed, across north and central Scotland. The politicians had their inaugural meeting at Holyrood yesterday to formulate their thoughts on concerns raised about radiation. |
Power line protesters turn out for 'deadline' march 14 December 2005 CAMPAIGNERS demanding a public inquiry into plans for an upgraded overhead powerline in the Highlands have been encouraged by the turnout at a mass protest.About 400 protesters, many carrying placards, were led from Balblair sub-station into Beauly by a kilted piper and Fraser clan chieftan Lord Lovat. |
Power line objections by the barrow-load 14 December 2005 THOUSANDS of objections to controversial plans for a high voltage overhead power line from Beauly to Denny had been lodged with the Scottish Executive by yesterday's deadline. |
12,000 object to 200ft pylons in the Highlands 13 December 2005 Twelve thousand objections have been lodged against plans for a 137-mile electricity pylon line in the Highlands. The figure was revealed yesterday as the deadline for public comment passed. Protesters along the route have mounted campaigns against the 600 giant pylons - some up to 200ft high - needed to transport "green" power from new wind farms. |
Reid adds voice to the power struggle 13 December 2005 GEORGE Reid, the presiding officer at the Scottish Parliament, yesterday became one of 12,000 objectors to the building of a power line from the Highlands to Stirlingshire. As the deadline for objections closed, he made a rare intervention in a highly controversial issue, lodging a formal complaint about the proposed building of pylons between Beauly, west of Inverness, and Denny, near Stirling. |
Giant Pylon Plan Faces 12,000-signature Petition 13 December 2005 A Protest banner and more than 12,000 objections to a 137-mile line of electricity pylons were lodged with the Scottish Executive yesterday. Campaigners are demanding a public inquiry to try to block the pylons, which would be up to 200ft high and stretch from Beauly, near Inverness, to Denny, in Stirlingshire. |
Town's Pylon Protest March Attracts 400 12 December 2005 Around 400 people marched through a Ross-shire town to demand a public inquiry into a new 137-mile pylon line and to highlight that objections had to be lodged with the Scottish Executive by today. Among the protesters who walked the two miles from Balblair sub-station to Beauly was Fraser clan chieftain Lord Lovat, who travelled from London for the march. |
Mega-pylons Unnecessary 12 December 2005 The claim by Maf Smith, of Scottish Renewables, that a victory for the anti-pylon lobby would "kill renewables in Scotland" (Focus, 7 December) could end up doing their cause more harm than good. We are on the same side. Our campaign group wholly supports renewable energy. However, we are against mega-pylons coming through some of the loveliest areas of the Highlands when they could be buried underground or laid under the sea. These alternatives are being ignored. |
Power Struggle for Laird 12 December 2005 'WELL IF I'd known you were going to be here I would have worn my plastic tiara!" exclaims a woman in a Barbour jacket and wellies as she marches across a muddy field in the direction of the 18th Lord Lovat, head of the Lovat Fraser clan, grandson of the Second World War hero Lord "Shimi" Lovat, or, as he would rather you called him, Simon. He beams down at her. "Hello there," he says jovially. "How are you? How are the girls? Isn't it a great turnout today?" It is indeed a great turnout. There are about 300 of us standing around on a patch of land at the edge of the Inverness-shire village of Beauly. Around us, placards are being waved and banners unfurled with slogans reading "Bury the pylons" and "Preserve local beauty". |
Iceland Cut Off 08 December 2005 It seems Iceland (the country) was cut off from the internet last week when the fibre carrying its connection was severed near Inverness. Shame there isn't a nice big underground tunnel it could go in! |
Power line 'key for green energy' 07 December 2005 Failure to build a controversial new power line could kill Scotland's renewable energy plans "stone dead", green businesses have warned. Opponents of the line said the larger pylons would ruin the landscape. |
Clan chief joins fight to shield rare birds from Highland pylons 05 December 2005 The head of a famous clan and his supermodel sister have joined a campaign to prevent electricity pylons from damaging a tiny wood that is home to four of Britain's most endangered birds of prey.Lord Lovat and his sister, Honor Fraser, fear that a line of pylons could kill the birds, including one of the first pairs of red kites reintroduced to Britain. |
Cairngorm Climbers Voice Pylon Concern 05 December 2005 A Group of Cairngorm mountaineers has voiced opposition to controversial plans to build 200ft pylons in the Highlands. The Cairngorm Club, which has 500 members based mostly in Aberdeen, condemned the proposals by Scottish and Southern Energy for a transmission line from Beauly to Denny. |
Unsubstantiated report regarding undergrounding. 30 November 2005 Reports are coming in that SSE is looking further into undergrounding the cables.Apparently, the proposal is to bring the subsea cable to the head of Loch Broom, into Lael Woods and then southwards approximately 80 yards East of the A835 to the Garve side of Braemore Junction, across to Strome Woods and then follow the line of the A835 to Loch Luichart. (This is more or less the route that we suspected they would survey for the undergrounding option). The survey is scheduled to take place on 13 December and interestingly they are also looking at Beauly area first. (Sorry no other details of exactly where in Beauly area they are looking) SSE may be looking at recent undergrounding schemes in Australia and Japan, apparently Japan has successfully developed undergrounding technology that is reliable. Does anyone know about the Japanese technology?? If anyone has any more information we would be pleased to hear. |
We've reached the pages of 'Vogue'! 30 November 2005 SUPERMODEL Honor Fraser's brother, the 16th Lord Lovat, is appealing to Frasers across the world to fight against plans for a £560 million power line that will pass through the clan's ancestral lands near Beauly. The 28-year-old aristocrat has sent an email around the world urging everybody to make a stand against the 600 proposed pylons, double the height of existing towers, that will take windfall energy from the Highlands to England. "A fiery email may not be as romantic as a fiery cross but it travels faster and further than a kilted runner," says a friend. |
Thousands back group in Cairngorms pylon protest. 30 November 2005 An Anti-pylon group in the Highlands yesterday handed over 2,670 protest letters to the Cairngorms National Park Authority and Highland Council, against plans to build 200ft pylons in the Cairngorms. |
Subsea line may sink plans for 200' pylons. 28 November 2005 There is a ray of hope for campaigners opposed to plans for 200ft pylons running down the spine of the Highlands. Power giant AMEC has proposed a 200-mile, sub-sea alternative to link massive windfarms on the Western Isles to the mainland, coming ashore at Hunterston in Ayrshire. |
Sea cable could replace pylons 27 November 2005 A COMPANY involved in plans for a controversial network of pylons running the length of Scotland is to propose an alternative scheme involving a 200-mile underwater cable. Amec has said that an overland cable scheme — opposed by campaigners because it threatens to destroy some of Scotland’s most precious countryside and create a public health risk — should be abandoned. |
Call for Inquiry into Plan for Pylons 22 November 2005 Around 300 people packed out a Highland village hall last night to attend a meeting which called for a public inquiry into a proposed 137-mile pylon line. Pylon Pressure, a local group which has been formed to protect Beauly and the surrounding area from the pylons "blighting" the landscape hosted the meeting at the Phipps Hall. |
Protestors empowered by Wombles Hit Song. 19 November 2005 Highland campaigners calling for a new power line to be buried underground, rather than carried by massive new electricity pylons, have adopted the Wombles song as their signature tune. The 1970s hit song, with its "underground, overground" chorus, will feature as protesters try to gather fresh support over concerns about plans for a 137-mile Beauly-Denny upgrade. |
'Pylon Capital' concerns voiced. 18 November 2005 A FORMER high-flying businessman has added his voice and money to fighting controversial plans for a high voltage power line which he claims would turn Beauly into the region's pylon capital.Canadian-born Brendan Clouston is the former executive vice president and chief operating officer of the American cable giant, Tele-Communications Inc. Now, he and "like-minded friends" are financing the newly-launched campaign group, Pylon Pressure, to fight proposals for a 137-mile high voltage powerline from Beauly to Denny. |
Model's fiery rally by email 17 November 2005 SUPERMODEL Honor Fraser is heading a campaign against plans for a 137-mile pylon line across the Highlands. The Scots beauty and her clan chief brother, Lord Lovat, have called on Frasers across the globe in a bid to repel the "modern day threat". Scottish and Southern Energy plans to put up a £200million cable taking wind-power electricity to England and Scotland's central belt. Campaigners claim the overhead line is a threat to health, landscape, tourism, wildlife and property values. They want it buried. Honor and her brother sent an email to clan members instead of the "fiery cross" - the old Highland call to arms. Lord Lovat, who has land in Beauly and the Aird, said: "The greatest asset the Highlands has is its beauty. "A fiery email may not be as romantic as a fiery cross but it travels faster and farther than a kilted runner." |
Council wants time to consider pylons 17 November 2005 Highland Council chiefs claimed yesterday that they had been refused sufficient time to properly investigate the implications of Scottish and Southern Energy's controversial Beauly to Denny pylon line upgrade. Planners revealed that a request for an extra six weeks to digest SSE's 1.7million-word document, in order to give a comprehensive and balanced response, had been rejected. |
Chief rallies clan to oppose pylons 16 November 2005 A clan chief is rallying clansmen around the world in a bid to prevent controversial proposals to build a line of giant pylons across the Highlands. |
Chieftain in pylons protest 16 November 2005 A YOUNG clan chief and his supermodel sister are leading a Highland revolt against a super-pylons scheme. Simon Fraser, the 16th Lord Lovat, and his sister Honor are rallying clan members to fight plans for a £560million power line. The 28-year-old aristocrat is battling a bid to build a 137-mile long line of 200ft high pylons from Beauly, near Inverness, to Denny in Stirlingshire. He is sending an email to Frasers across the world, asking them to oppose the plan. The chief said: "A fiery email may not be as romantic as a fiery cross but it travels faster and further than a kilted runner." His supermodel sister Honor, now married and living in Los Angeles, is supporting his protest. Scottish and Southern Energy want to construct the 600 pylons - double the height of existing towers - to take windfarm energy from the Highlands to England. But the line will pass the clan's ancestral lands near Beauly. Lord Lovat inherited the title in 1995 at the age of 18 but his ancestral estate, Beaufort Castle, was sold to Stagecoach tycoon Ann Gloag to pay off huge debts. Now a stockbroker, he still has a farmhouse and cottage at Beauly |
More reports of Lord Lovat's email campaign. 16 November 2005 Lord Lovat's email campaign was also reported in The Daily Express and the Daily Mail. The text of the reports can be viewed by downloading a .pdf file. |
Jacobites Go to War on Pylons and Windfarms
15 November 2005 A Jacobite re-enactment group has declared war - on giant pylons and windfarms. The White Cockade Society has used a commemoration marking the 290th anniversary of the Battle of Sheriffmuir near Dunblane to highlight its opposition to the blades and the 200ft high electricity pylons which could replace the existing structures between Beauly in the Highlands and Denny in Stirlingshire.
